What a week. The reason I haven't posted any sooner than today? I've been busy, y'all. Really flippin' busy. But good busy. Last week, I had 3 auditions and Tom and I (mostly Tom) delivered our beloved film. Last weekend was spent sleeping and playing video games and board games and relaxing. This week, I had 5 auditions and 1 callback. FIVE auditions in one week. I haven't been this busy since before the SAG commercial strike in 2000. With the exception an audition for a Hallmark Channel film this week and an indie horror last week, every other audition or callback that I've had in the past two weeks have been for commercials. Before the commercial strike in 2000, I was going out a lot. There were times I had three auditions in a day, changing outfits in public bathrooms. It took several years after the strike for me to get back to feeling a sense of equilibrium -- if I have at least 2 auditions a week, I feel like I'm doing well.
So, if you add all of the auditions I had this week plus the 40+ hours at Urban Basic Cable Competition Show plus my acting class plus helping out on stuff for Fellowship of the Dice, you can see why I'm in front of a computer on a Friday night, struggling to keep my eyes open. While I feel really tired and behind on some pop culture things (like TV shows and my neglected Netflix rentals), I don't think I would want this any other way. I would rather be this busy than not. When you really boil it down, auditions are a numbers game. The more auditions you have, the better chance you have of landing a job. The more auditions you have, you have less time to sit and think and double guess your choices for the audition -- you just have time to do the audition and move on.
I feel quite fortunate to be working with the very understanding folks at Urban Basic Cable Competition Show. They've been nothing but supportive of me having to take off for hours at a time as I traverse the LA basin to go to one place or another. I mean, I know I bust my butt for them and I know they are lucky to have me there, but I am lucky to have them. I've been coming to work early to make sure that not only am I not slacking on my duties but also putting up the appearance that I'm not slacking on my duties. In this town, both are pretty vital. And sometimes, the latter is more necessary than the former.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go lie down. The Oscars are on Sunday and I have to conserve my energy to clean the house and prepare for The Departed to win more awards than it deserves (ie. none).
