My day job for the past few years has involved me sitting in front of video monitor, typing down every word people say. My current gig at Urban Basic Cable Competition Show involves a good deal of transcribing every word the contestants say. The job also involves papercutting sections of the show and helping with making our episodes funnier, but a good deal of my day is transcribing.
As I've previously mentioned, Tom and I have finally reached a distribution deal for our mockumentary. The past week has been an intense flurry of activity of Tom and I setting up color correction sessions, audio mixing sessions, sending off artwork for the cover art, etc. Two items that what we have to deliver are called .SCC and .STL files, both of which Tom and I had never heard of before. Fortunately, having had worked in post production for as long as I've had, I know people who can answer these problems.
[This IM conversation is paraphrased and from my recollections]
Me: So, what are these files?
Drew: They are both text files that are coded and laid in audio tracks. One is for close captioning and the other is for subtitles. You have to go to a Caption House and have them do it.
Me: We basically need to have the film transcribed.
Drew: Yep.
Drew mentioned some places where we can get this done. I then left Tom a message about this and went back to work... transcribing. I talked to the Post Supervisor for Urban Basic Cable Competition Show about this as well. During breaks from transcribing, I started calling around to get rates... for transcribing. After pulling some resources and scoring a good rate for the trasncription of the film, I went back to work... transcribing for the TV show.
I mean, if it was just as simple enough as transcribing the film in Microsoft Word, I'd be doing that right now. Alas, it's not. Sigh. This project has been a huge learning experience (and cruve) for us. We're in the home stretch right now in getting this film delivered. Throw on top on this a mild flu on Monday, an audition and a callback on Tuesday and just, you know, work and life and stuff, it's been busy for Jon. So, cross your fingers for me.
